Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior

DRO

In Plain Language

Reinforcement depends on a specified behavior not occurring during an interval or at a check.

ABA Definition

A procedure delivering reinforcement contingent on the absence of a target response over an interval or at a specified moment.

Everyday Example

A quiet-game point awarded after a round with no talking illustrates an absence-based rule.

ABA Example

An interval DRO plan specifies the target response, observation interval, and absence criterion; momentary DRO checks only a designated instant.

How It May Be Used

DRO does not by itself teach a replacement skill and can coincide with other unwanted behavior.
