Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior
DRI
In Plain Language
Reinforcing a behavior that cannot happen at the same time as the behavior being reduced.
ABA Definition
A form of differential reinforcement in which the selected alternative is physically incompatible with the target response.
Everyday Example
Carrying a tray with both hands cannot occur at the same instant as clapping.
ABA Example
A team might reinforce holding a selected object with both hands as an alternative to a specifically defined hand action, if this fits the person’s goals.
How It May Be Used
Physical incompatibility alone does not ensure the alternative meets the same need.
