Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior
DRA
In Plain Language
Reinforcing an alternative skill that can take the place of another behavior.
ABA Definition
Differential reinforcement of a specified alternative response relative to a target response; function-based alternatives can produce the same reinforcer.
Everyday Example
A meeting leader promptly responds to a raised hand, and turn-taking increases.
ABA Example
A learner receives assistance after an accessible help request as part of a function-based plan.
How It May Be Used
The alternative should be feasible and meaningful for the learner.
Commonly Confused With
DRI selects an alternative that cannot physically occur with the target. DRO reinforces absence of the target, not a specified alternative.
