Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates

DRL

In Plain Language

Reinforcing a lower rate of a behavior that is still useful at some level.

ABA Definition

Reinforcement is contingent on responding at or below a specified rate or with specified spacing between responses.

Everyday Example

A game rewards measured button presses rather than rapid repeated pressing.

ABA Example

A team may use a spacing criterion for a safe skill when the goal is less frequent responding, not elimination.

How It May Be Used

Not appropriate when any occurrence would be dangerous or when it would suppress essential communication.
