Automatically Maintained Behavior
In Plain Language
Behavior that continues because of an effect it directly produces.
ABA Definition
Responding maintained by automatic reinforcement rather than socially mediated consequences.
Everyday Example
Stretching continues because it directly relieves stiffness.
ABA Example
Assessment may support a directly produced reinforcing effect for a repetitive response.
How It May Be Used
Repetition or occurring alone does not by itself prove automatic reinforcement; consider health and context.
