Automatic Reinforcement

In Plain Language

A behavior produces its own reinforcing effect without another person delivering it.

ABA Definition

Reinforcement directly produced by a response, independent of social mediation; it can involve stimulation or relief.

Everyday Example

Humming may continue because the sound or vibration is enjoyable.

ABA Example

A clinician considers automatic reinforcement as one possible explanation for behavior observed across social conditions.

How It May Be Used

“Sensory” is a common shorthand but does not identify a specific maintaining effect. Harmless self-regulation need not be reduced.
