Punishment
In Plain Language
A consequence makes a behavior less likely in similar situations in the future.
ABA Definition
A response–consequence relation in which the consequence decreases the future probability of that response.
Everyday Example
Touching a hot pan produces pain and you touch hot pans less often afterward.
ABA Example
A clinician uses data, rather than intention, to determine whether a consequence reduced future responding.
How It May Be Used
This is a descriptive definition, not a recommendation to use punitive methods.
Parent/Caregiver Tip
Ask about prevention, communication, and reinforcement-based alternatives.
Important Note
Punishment can have harmful effects and does not by itself teach an alternative skill.
