Something is added after a behavior and the behavior becomes less likely.

ABA Definition

Presentation of a stimulus contingent on a response that decreases the future frequency of that response.

Everyday Example

A painful prick follows touching a thorn and touching thorns decreases.

In reviewing historical data, a clinician might classify an added reprimand as punishment only if the behavior decreased afterward.

How It May Be Used

“Positive” means added, not beneficial. This example describes a process, not a recommended strategy.
