Extinction Burst

In Plain Language

A possible temporary increase in a behavior when its previous reinforcement stops.

ABA Definition

An initial increase in response frequency, intensity, or duration following discontinuation of reinforcement.

Everyday Example

You press a stuck elevator button repeatedly before stopping.

ABA Example

A clinician monitors for an early rise in responding when a previously maintaining consequence is discontinued.

How It May Be Used

Bursts are not inevitable and an increase does not prove extinction is working. New distress requires reassessment and attention to safety.
