Extinction

In Plain Language

A previously reinforced behavior no longer produces the reinforcement that maintained it.

ABA Definition

Discontinuation of reinforcement for a previously reinforced response, typically resulting in a decrease in responding over time.

Everyday Example

You stop pressing a broken remote button after it repeatedly no longer changes the channel.

ABA Example

A clinician reviews whether an identified maintaining reinforcer is no longer contingent on a response, while alternative skills and safety supports are available.

How It May Be Used

Extinction is function-specific and can involve distress or escalation. It is not a general instruction to ignore someone.

Commonly Confused With

Ignoring is extinction only if it withholds the attention that maintained that response. Ignoring does not stop reinforcement from escape, objects, or directly produced effects.
